Description

A large-scale biblical scene depicting Abraham sending Hagar and Ishmael into the wilderness. The emotional weight of the narrative is conveyed through gesture and composition.

Analysis

One of Drost's largest and most ambitious compositions, this late work shows the artist at the height of his narrative powers. The sprawling landscape background and multi-figure composition demonstrate his ambition to work on a monumental scale comparable to Rembrandt's grand biblical scenes.

Historical Context

Painted around 1659, the final year of Drost's life. He was buried in Venice on February 25, 1659, at approximately age 25. The year marked the Peace of the Pyrenees (November 1659) between France and Spain, reshaping European power dynamics. Oliver Cromwell had died in England the previous year (September 1658), causing political uncertainty. In the art world, Rembrandt β€” having lost his house and collection β€” was living in reduced circumstances on the Rozengracht. Vermeer was producing early genre works in Delft. Huygens published Systema Saturnium, describing Saturn's rings. Drost's last works show him synthesizing Dutch and Italian traditions in what would be his final artistic statements.
