Description

A rare landscape drawing by Willem Drost depicting a bend in the Amstel River near Amsterdam. Landscape subjects are extremely unusual in Drost's known oeuvre, making this a significant addition to understanding his artistic range.

Analysis

This landscape drawing, attributed to Drost by Sumowski and cataloged by PubHist as a confirmed work, demonstrates that Drost engaged with the Dutch landscape tradition alongside his figural and biblical subjects. The Amstel River scene, dated c. 1653, would have been executed shortly after Drost's training with Rembrandt and reflects the contemporary interest in local topography shared by many Rembrandt pupils. Together with Thatched Cottage (WD-D15), it suggests a small but significant landscape component to Drost's graphic oeuvre.
