A small self-portrait etching by Drost, signed "w drost 1652", showing the young artist at about age 19 in the act of drawing. The etching medium demonstrates Drost's training in printmaking within Rembrandt's workshop.

Analysis

Signed and dated 1652, this etching is the earliest securely dated work by Drost and is arguably a self-portrait. Essential Vermeer's catalog notes: "An early etching signed w drost 1652 is probably a self-portrait, in which Drost portrayed himself as a young man drawing." The bold hatching and confrontational gaze reflect Rembrandt's influence on Drost's graphic style. The Rijksmuseum holds the only known impression. Etchings by Drost are extremely rare, making this a significant addition to the understanding of his graphic oeuvre.
