Description
A dramatic biblical parable rendered with emotional intensity. The painting captures the moment of confrontation between the king and the unforgiving servant.
Analysis
Drost condenses the parable's moral message into a single powerful scene. The king's accusatory gesture and the servant's cowering response create a dynamic diagonal tension. The restricted palette of gold, brown, and deep red heightens the dramatic impact.
Historical Context
Painted around 1655, the year Drost likely left Amsterdam for Italy. Christiaan Huygens discovered Titan, Saturn's largest moon, using an improved telescope (March 1655) β a landmark in Dutch science. In politics, Johan de Witt consolidated his power, marrying Wendela Bicker in February. The Dutch Republic was at peace but tensions with England remained. For Drost, this painting represents the end of his Amsterdam period and the beginning of his journey south β he would soon encounter the Venetian painters who would transform his style.
